GB has been involved in theatre productions since about the age of five, at first in family shows at Christmas(1945 - 1958), at the Birmingham Theatre School (where he acted, wrote plays and directed them, 1958 - 1960), and at New College, Oxford (1960 - 1963). Since 1969, GB has directed dramas in English in Japan—in Reitaku University English Drama Group (R.U.E.D.G.,1969 - 1994), Reitaku High School and Meitoku Gijuku High School, as well as in community and school groups in Hijikawa, Ehime Prefecture. He also founded and directed the Feste English Speaking Theatre (Tokyo area, 1982 - 1993) and the South Ehime English Drama Society (S.E.E.D.S.) (1995 - 2003). He has also directed various special productions with students and graduates of Reitaku University (notably in 1994 & 1999). He is currently (April, 2009) directing a special production of Maeterlinck’s “Pelleas & Melisande” with Reitaku graduates & students, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the university and as a memorial to 14 old members who have passed away—to be performed on October 3rd, 2009, the university’s Homecoming Day.
